In late 1981, Maurice "Butch Sabbe, his wife Esther and Bill Taylor began the process of bringing the Gold Wing Road Riders Association to the Ohio. area.  After much deliberation and thought, Butch agreed to take the position of "State Director" (better known today as "District Director") with Bill taking the position of "Area Representative" (better known today as "Chapter Director").

On the cold, wet morning of April 2, 1982, a "kick off" meeting at the Imperial House in Findlay, Ohio was held.  At this first meeting, only 6 to 8 people in attendance were actual GWRRA members.  In all, a total of 47 people attended this first meeting and more than half became members that day.

In May, we elected Officers that would represent Chapter A with 65 people in attendance.  We were honored to have more than 40 Gold Wings parked out in front of the Imperial House for the public to see.  Trying to change the image of the modern-day motorcyclist was probably the most important reason for starting Chapter A.  Our first officers included Ken Roe as Ride Coordinator - Leila Taylor as Secretary and Ken Fairchild as Public Relations.

A few months later, Ken met with local mall officials and set up our first Mall Show where we had 75 Gold Wings scheduled to participate.  After that we had our first poker run on July 10th with all proceeds going to the Kidney Foundation.  Other fund raisers of note in later years included:

  • Chapter A's Cycle-Thon which raised over $4,500 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
  • In the early years, $8,000 was donated to many different charities.
  • Many donations over the years to Toys For Tots - which is still a favorite charity today.

Chapter A was very fortunate to have three local Honda dealers as sponsors when it began; including Schiet's Honda of Fremont.  They are still in existence and continue to sponsor our Chapter.  We cannot forget Mr. John Laube who owned Laube's Cycle City in Findlay.  He became very instrumental in our success as a Chapter by donating door prizes and promoting our Chapter.

With Butch becoming a GWRRA member in January of 1981 and Esther to follow in April, 1982, we are very fortunate to include them in our Chapter today.  Assuming many positions over the years, they now hold the title of Chapter Advisors.  it is never a dull moment to sit down with them and hear about the "good ole days" of Chapter A!

Chapter A was awarded the coveted CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD for 2014 during an Awards Ceremony at Cabin Fever in February, 2015. This was our second year competing for this Award (we came in Second Place last year).  And then - at our April, 2015 Gathering, we learned that our Chapter had also received the REGION D CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD for 2014.  Our Chapter will was in competition for the National Award -  competing at Wing Ding in Huntsville, Alabama in September  !!  Unfortunately, we did not progress forward for this honor - congratulations to the winners from Florida!
